Wear Red on June 8th!
Come Celebrate Pentecost Sunday — Wear Red on June 8th!
This Sunday, June 8th, we’re celebrating Pentecost Sunday, and we want to invite everyone to join in a beautiful and meaningful tradition: wear something red to church!
What Is Pentecost Sunday?
Pentecost is one of the great feast days of the Church, sometimes called the "birthday of the Church." It takes place fifty days after Easter and commemorates the moment in Acts 2 when the Holy Spirit was poured out on the disciples. Gathered in Jerusalem for the Jewish festival of Shavuot, the followers of Jesus suddenly experienced a rushing wind, tongues of fire resting on each of them, and the ability to speak in many languages. It was the beginning of a Spirit-filled movement that would grow across time and space into what we now know as the Church.
Why Wear Red?
Red has become the traditional liturgical color for Pentecost in many Christian traditions, including Roman Catholic, Anglican, Lutheran, and many Reformed churches. The color symbolizes the fire of the Holy Spirit that descended on the disciples. It also reminds us of the passion, energy, and vitality of a Church alive with God’s Spirit.
Wearing red on Pentecost Sunday is a simple but powerful way to embody the story we remember — a way of showing that we, too, are part of this Spirit-filled community. It connects us not only to the first Pentecost but to generations of Christians who have gathered in prayer, longing for God's Spirit to renew the face of the earth.
So dig through your closet, pull out your red shirts, dresses, ties, ribbons, or even socks — and come ready to worship on Sunday! Whether you wear a little red or a lot of red, it’s a joyful expression of hope, unity, and the ongoing movement of the Holy Spirit among us.
We can't wait to celebrate Pentecost with you. Come, Holy Spirit!
